Why I Seldom Speak for No-Fee 

(and why, if you are a speaker, should not).

As a public speaker, I don’t simply put up a PowerPoint presentation and drone on about my company or the price of peas in Lake Nebagamon (no offense to peas). My talks aren’t filled with the annoying “um and ahs”, with the same worn out stories used over and over since way back when Moses did a table topic about the tablets. This can almost bring attendees to tears; when that is not the effect you want. (If I hear the one about “peeling back the layers off an onion” story one more time, I’m going to cry). 

Plus, whether I present a short 7 to 15-minute talk or a 45-minute keynote, you can be sure that the audience is totally involved (as when using the “pig being more committed than the chicken” in the ham or egg breakfast story. Sorry, I couldn’t resist).  And I proactively present value, meaning exactly this, I provide information and tools that attendees will put to use to modify desired outcomes immediately; as in that very moment!

I do (on a very limited availability) offer what is called “no-fee” talks, which aren’t actually “free”; they are “no-fee” because something of value is always exchanged for my time. It may not be “money” so it could be getting the membership list so that I can use it to promote attendance for the event, be better prepared for the event, and follow up after the event. I may agree to do  “no-fee” events as a way to introduce upcoming paid seminars and workshops; which is mutually beneficial to both the hosting organization and me. Event planners may provide a hotel room, a paid trip to the speaking location or some other creative “payment” in exchange for my tutelage (I just threw that in there to be sure you are still reading, and listening). I can also assist organizations in finding a business to sponsor my talk so they aren’t the payer. (If you are looking to book “yours truly” contact my office to explore and negotiate these options and more).

The biggest reason I charge for my speaking appearances couldn’t be better said than with this statement by my colleague, Russell Brunson:

Those who pay, pay attention.

Over the last decade, I’ve invited my friends or family members to sit in on events that others have paid $25,000 to attend. Not once in those 10 years has a single one of those people who sat in for free, launched a successful company. Yet in the SAME room sat people who invested in themselves. They heard the exact same information and, because they had invested money to be there, turned that same information into multi-million-dollar-a-year companies.

And like Brunson, I now have less time to coach one on one clients as my own speaking calendar fills. We all only have 24 hours in each day and each hour’s value is only what we assign to it.

Of course, most successful speakers want to “give back” just like any other accomplished person would. There is always the reward that goes along with teaching and seeing the results of one's work, which in my case is the improvement in the lives by all who leave my events. But this really needs to be a positive “side benefit” of the greater whole. This sentiment is why I believe, that there are still “starving artists” in the world. They value people and the positive change their art (whatever that art may be, painting, teaching or speaking) does for others; which is good, but this then temps them to charge less or nothing at all for their masterpieces. I and most successful artisans have learned that we need to do our very best in what we do and to charge accordingly. Or, we too (and our best work) will only be acknowledged after we are with all of the "Michelangelos" in the sky. 

My goal is to be available to speak for those who value themselves and their own time and talents enough to respect the value my time and talents. In return, I continue to increase the value I offer by implementing the “Law of Compensation”, which both Earl Nightingale and Bob Proctor told me is based on 1) The need for what you do, 2) Your ability to do it, and 3) The difficulty there is in replacing you.

Regardless if you are a public speaker, public figure or John or Jane Q. Public, always give more in all that you do. You’ll never have to worry about receiving some sort of value in return. Then always consider your options before offering your services, whatever it is that you do; speaking, baking or candlestick making, on a “no-fee” basis.

Be an experiential learner and student:
1. VISUALIZATION
Set aside 30 minutes in the next 2 days to do a closed eye process – what I refer to as a visualization exercise - 
  • What does your life look like?
  • What does your career look like?
  • What are your relationships like?
  • What kind of speaking & training events are you attracting into your life?
Write down your vision in detail and/or create a vision board that represents this new reality – and then put it somewhere you can see it every day. The more you visualize your goals, the faster you’ll accomplish them.

READ or REREAD THE SUCCESS PRINCIPLES

KEEP A PROGRESS JOURNAL
Write down all of the insights you have as you progress through the modules. Notice what happens as you consciously implement the Success Principles into your life.
Many of your future students will no doubt be approaching this content for the first time, and the more you understand where they’re coming from, the easier it will be for you to deliver the teaching in a way that has maximum impact for them.
Note the results you see happening in your life and your business. The impact your thoughts and feelings have on your results. What is happening for you in the area of relationships? Are you surrounding yourself with positive people? Are you enjoying more meaningful interactions? Are you more productive at work and home? Observe the shifts that are happening.
The more attention you pay to the positive results in your life, the more powerful they will become.

Is the Publisher of Think and Grow Rich Sabotaging your Success?

Now we’ll look at the rest of the publisher’s preface in Think and Grow Rich. As I mentioned before, I am slowly dissecting the text (and that’s what it is; a textbook for success and Napoleon Hill meant it to be used as “lessons”) but you can go as slow or as fast as you want and then visit my words whenever you want to. And know that my words are my words and thoughts. You need to write (in the margin of the book) your words and thoughts.

Hill calls this work “a volume” and the publisher here relates how the reader will find 13 “money making” principles which are “essential” to “guarantee” financial independence.


These are strong words and I encourage you to take them to heart. The “guarantee” depends on whether you, the reader, guarantee that you’ll act on those principles. My suggestion is that when they appear in the book that you write them down and evaluate where you are with each, set some goals with each and make them happen!
Also, the publisher states that “riches cannot always be measured in money”.

Is the Publisher of Think and Grow Rich Sabotaging your Success? 

I would caution you that these are the publisher’s words and not that of Hill. This may be an attempt to rationalize your success; for those who are always saying things like “money isn’t everything” and “I don’t like (or need) money”. These, of course, are “rational lies”. This book IS about money and how to make more of it. I will tell you here that “riches are measured in money”. Now wait a moment, I’ll get to your thoughts.

Yes, you can be “rich” in friends and other things but the word “rich” has mostly to do with money. Don’t confuse this with “wealth”. Rich is money, wealth is abundance in all the other areas of your life. Money is only one part of what I’ve termed “The Major 8™” which is the track that I have created and use in my coaching to help my clients achieve success through balance and wisdom.

The "Major 8" is a group of desires of almost all people. Anything not listed in the "Major 8" will most likely fall under one of the categories. When you are doing well in all 8 areas, you have balance in your life. Here they are:

Perfect Health
Enjoyment of Food
Restful Sleep
Money (Enough to Share and Spare)
Life & Legacy (I am “The Life & Legacy Coach™)
Sexual Gratification
The wellbeing of Friends and Loved Ones
The feeling of Importance and Respect

I’m not trying to get you thinking so much about these eight areas just now but only to show you that “money” is only one of these areas; yes, it is a “big” area but not the “only” area. I suggest that when you have the other seven in balance that you indeed have “wealth”.

“… these higher estates which always have been and always will be denied to all except those who are ready for them”.

Think and Grow Rich will help you to become “ready for them” but note too that this is a journey where you’ll continue to become “ready for them”. Bob Proctor understands the journey and has walked it daily by reading the book at least for several minutes each day, and has for; well, I’ll let Bob tell you how many years. Understand also that where you have been brought you to where you are today; good, bad or otherwise. Jack Canfield calls this, “So what”. However, know that it “filters” your view on life and what you’ll read in this material. Write in the margins, in a journal and revisit your words and thoughts and see how things change as you change!

The last sentence in the publisher’s preface speaks of being prepared “… for the accumulation of material riches in abundance”.

That is exactly what you’ll get an experience with discipline, diligence and deciding how to go forward with what you’ll receive by reading (and sharing) the wisdom in this book. Thousands of men and women have created millions for themselves and others and you will too!

Think and Grow Rich, What I Think of the Publisher's Preface

I started reading Think and Grow Rich again after recently buying the handsomely packaged version with the “gilded paper edges” and (vegan) leather bond cover. I often wanted one that looked like the one that Bob Proctor has said he has read from daily for the past eons of years, but I never saw one that looked as nice. I also wished for one that is the (very) original version which Kevin Trudeau speaks of which was quickly removed from the public and replaced with an effective but greater “watered down” version.

Though this states “THE COMPLETE CLASSIC VERSION” I’m thinking it is not the one which Trudeau spoke of but this version is a tool responsible for the success of probably most of the rich people from the time it was published in 1937 through today.

As a “teacher” in the true sense of the word, as I continue to turn these pages I will also write in its margins my thoughts and share them here with you. 

Certainly, you should do this on your own and I’m just like you in so many ways; a mere mortal, but I would like to share from my life experience and relation as a conduit to the wisdom of the Universe. As I read I will record my thoughts along this journey and will literally (continue to) Think and Grow Rich. If you are up to the “ride”, I invite you to come along.

Most people do not read the preface of books. We want to get right to the point; show me the money, etc. If you are reading this, you are not “Most People”.

This version of Think and Grow Rich has two.

The publisher’s preface contains the seeds of thought which precede the harvest of results as the reader continues the path of pages and acts on the experiences of the mind which come throughout the journey.

The preface explains how this material is an entire philosophy of money-making, a complete instruction on how to sell one’s personal services and a perfect system of self-analysis. Let’s explore each.

Do you have a philosophy about “anything”? If so, do you know what it is? As far as the area of money, what is your philosophy? Take a few moments and write down a few thoughts about “money”. Now, as you move through Hill’s material, you may want to compare yours with his and adopt much or most of his.

Next per his words, “selling personal services”, I hear some saying, “I don’t sell”, “I don’t like selling” and “I don’t want to sell”. To this, I say, “HOGWASH!” I suppose I could say “BS!” or any other strong term to get your attention, but minimally I must tell you this, “Get over it”! And here’s why.

You are selling. You are “selling” every time you write, speak or communicate in any way. You are selling others on your ideas, how you want to be perceived by them and so much more. Hopefully, you are intently “selling” your children on living better lives to better the community and the world.

Think of this. When interviewing for a “non-selling job”, you are selling the prospective employer “you” and your “personal services”. And, guess what? The better “salesperson” you are, the more money you can ask for in that position and with any other transaction. This book will show you how.

Thirdly, let’s cover the aspect of self-analysis. How old are you? How much do you really know about yourself? There, I rest my case. (Please don’t think I’m pointing fingers only at you, if I did I am acutely aware then that at the same time I would have three pointing back at me!) Think and Grow Rich is like a mirror and as you and I evaluate our experiences; successes or so-called failures, we’ve experienced what we should and should not do to create the results we want. If we want to better ourselves and our world, we’ll look at our reflection, reflect and act again. Then return, look for positive changes and repeat the process over and over. We’ll never even get close to any real potential if we throw away our mirror!

All of the above is just about one page in these three pages of the publisher’s preface so you know there is a lot of “meat and potatoes” to digest from this entire volume. I won’t keep you from going forward at your own pace and moving forward beyond my analyses but I invite you to return when you can to compare your thoughts with mine.
